The Roller Coaster of Emotions: Finals Week

Classes are over. There is time ahead to study and prepare, to read and review. Final exams are headed your way and you may be experiencing some significant emotional highs lows, not unlike a roller coaster, as finals week approaches. It is important that you give your emotions some room, and find a way to express yourself before the tension begins to mount. You may experience symptoms of euphoria:

“This test is open book/open note…”

“I feel really prepared for this. I’m not even gonna study.”

“The final will consist mostly of passages for close reading…”

You may also experience the symptoms of despair when you realize that you can’t do half a semester of reading in a week:

“I’m just gonna finish these 200 pages tonight…”

“I’ll pull just one more all-nighter at the library…”

“I’ll go get something to eat once I’ve done this practice problem set…”

Finally, you may feel like giving up and letting finals week destroy you:

“Whatever. If I don’t know it by now then oh well…”

“I discovered a new TV show on Netflix/blog/bizarre medical videos on YouTube. I’m done…”

In the end you must remember that we’re all on this finals roller coaster together.

“We can study together! I have all the notes!”

“The results of the final exam will be curved…”

The thing about roller coasters is that they’re meant to be scary. Follow the rules: hands and feet inside the car, safety bar down, and smile for the picture at the end. When it’s all over, you’ll step off the tracks and into summer.
