The Wolf of Wall Street – A Story Stranger than Fiction
by Jeffrey Nash on Jan, 14 2014On the first week of break, my mother and I saw Martin Scorsese’s latest (acclaimed) film about a stockbroker who did some less-than-reputable things to get very, very rich: The Wolf of Wall Street. As all of these things go, there was much debauchery along the way. While I would have preferred to have had a different fellow movie-goer during the innumerable sex scenes, I was glad that I chose to see it with her, because the film was all we talked about for days. Knowing it was based on the true story of Jordan Belfort – a former penny-stock broker and convicted felon who made literally millions off of unsuspecting people – we wondered how realistic it was. After some Googling and YouTube-ing, I found this awesome Grant Lewers interview with the real Jordan Belfort who, by the way, looks astonishingly similar to Leonardo DiCaprio. Born into relative average-ness, Belfort details in this interview how he made it all and then lost it due to what he deems ‘small mistakes’ in an otherwise legal, though perhaps less-than-honest, business. One of the most interesting portions of the interview is when he insists that one of the most over-the-top and insane parts in his book, off of which the movie is based, was actually downplayed due to time. Yes, by inductive logic, he essentially claims that his real life is crazier than the Scorsese-influenced version, and I just might believe him.
