FollowIf you’ve read one of my past articles, you’ll know that I have a soft spot for coffee shops. I personally find it the ideal place to get my study on. The wavering aroma of coffee, the free (albeit painfully slow at times) Wi-Fi, the low buzz of public ambience, and did I mention the sheer amount of cute babes that you encounter on a regular basis? There’s just something special about watching others and seeing how they go about their own personal lives, the way they talk and act and socialize. Some call it stalking; I argue that it’s strictly people watching (and also, procrastination).
So why do we have such an infatuation with the actions of other individuals? People are fascinating creatures, and honestly, sometimes I enjoy being out in public places just so I can have the opportunity to observe other human beings and try to figure out who they are just by the first impression they leave on me.
I almost think people-watching is an art form. At the very least, it’s like a hobby. A way to pass the time by carefully observing those around you and trying to form some assumptions based off the way they look, act, and express themselves in that moment. These can range anywhere from trying to guess who they are, where they’re coming from or where they’re headed off to, to what they’ve been through in life, what they’re currently doing, and so on. As a writer, I personally have done my fair share of people watching and used my observations as inspiration.
Where to do it?
Basically, anywhere that you can comfortably observe individuals from afar, and is also moderately populated and bustling with activity, is ideal for people watching. Chances are, if you enjoy people watching and do it on a daily basis, you’re sure to have those one or two places that have become regular hot spots for you. It honestly doesn’t matter where you go, though; no matter where you travel to, you will end up with more than enough interesting people to keep you occupied.
Café – As mentioned before, this is my personal place of choice. I really do enjoy nestling down at a corner table in Starbucks or Milano, and just sitting back and evaluating people. I don’t mean to say that I’m judging them, though; rather, I’m simply watching them as they go about their daily lives. Sometimes you can really tell a lot about a person just by what kind of textbook they’re opening up, or even what kind of coffee they’re ordering.
Public transportation – This is another one of my favorite locations to people watch. The sheer amount of interesting people that you’re sure to come across makes for the ideal experience. Whether you’re hopping on the 51B or taking BART to another city, you’re sure to meet a few individuals worth checking out. If you’ve got a long ride ahead of you, then go ahead and plug in your headphones, and just enjoy the people – it’s a good way to pass the time.
Restaurants – Like cafes, restaurants are really great places to observe others. Some of the coolest dates I’ve ever had were just the two of us at a booth, a plate of fries between us, making up stories about people based solely on what they looked like. Perhaps a bit shallow, but hey – all in good fun.
Parks – I love parks, because they’re great places to go when you just need to catch some fresh air and clear your head. They’re also wonderful spots for people watching. Because all kinds of people visit parks, they make for good sources of inspiration. When I’m not in line ordering my fourth cup of espresso, I can usually be found on a park bench, sketchbook in hand, watching people as they jog, walk their dogs, and skateboard on by.

Shopping Malls – With Black Friday having just come and gone, I felt that malls needed to be mentioned as well. They are frequented by all kinds of (weird) people, which makes them perfect for observing them as they’re frantically running around from store to store. Just this past weekend, as I was taking a lunch break at the food court, I definitely observed my fair share of loud middle schoolers, frazzled mothers, business executives, and those shoppers with five different bags on one arm.
How to do it?
Find someplace well-populated and comfortable – See above for some suggested locations. Ultimately, it comes down to what you like best. Some places will just yield better results than others.
Blend in – People watching is meant to be a casual and leisurely activity, not some kind of sport. There’s a difference between observing people for fun, and appearing creepy. In other words, don’t make it seem like you’re stalking people. Rather, just keep a low profile and look like you’re genuinely just scanning your surroundings out of curiosity. And remember, while you’re busy observing others, chances are, someone’s no doubt doing the same to you.
Bring a friend – People watching is definitely ten times more fun when you’re with good company. That way, you can talk things out with them, exchange observations, and even play games (see below).
Bring something to write in – If you enjoy people watching for the inspiration, then it only makes sense to have something in hand to jot down anything that might come to mind. Ideally, this can be either a notebook or a laptop. If you’re going someplace like a café, it also helps you to blend in, and makes it seem like you’re actually doing work.
Play games – If you’re with a friend, or even by yourself, people watching can become even more interesting when you’ve got some objectives in mind.
- Look-alikes – Pretty self-explanatory. The goal is to basically point out people that resemble celebrities, family members, friends, or historical characters. You can even assign point values.
- Subculture classifications – Best done someplace that’s heavily populated with all kinds of people, like the mall. Try and categorize people into the different kinds of subculture over a period of time, such as hipsters, jocks, skaters, nerds, etc., and keep tally marks for each.
- The Sherlock Method – For the more advanced people watchers. It requires more attention to detail and a sense of deduction. The goal is to try and guess everything about an individual, from their job, to their status in life, marital status, and character traits, based on your observations about how they act, what they’re wearing, and, if you’re close enough to eavesdrop, even according to their conversation. If you’re with a friend, you can even work together.
- Dialogue – This is really fun to do with someone else. Pick a pair of people talking together, and, based on someone’s body language, pretend you’re them and imagine what they’re saying. Then have your partner do the other person.
- Story-time – For the writers. This is a really great way to sharpen your skills; come up with a short piece of fiction or a poem based on a person. You can even create an entire back-story for them.
- The Rating Game – One of my favorites, and also the easiest to do in quick succession. You can rate people on a scale of 1-10, or with a letter grade.
- Smash or Pass – Very similar to the previous game, except take it one step further. No longer is the question just “do I find you attractive?”, but rather, “would I bang you?”
So the next time you accidentally catch me staring you down, don’t worry – I’m most likely just casually observing you doing your own thing for my own inspiration. Either that, or I’m playing that last game on the list.
