With spring break fast approaching many students are scrambling for plans that don’t include their parents or a remote control and a bag of chips. If you are partial to skiing and impartial to crowded living quarters, I recommend a group trip to the Cal Lodge in North Lake Tahoe. It is the perfect place to beat those post-midterm blues.

The lodge, an antique 10,000 square foot wooden structure snuggled cozily into the snow-laden mountains of Lake Tahoe, is owned by the Associated Students of the University of California, making it prime for student group rates. The lodge can hold anywhere from ten to fifty guests, with prices ranging from $30 to $45 a night for lodging and two meals a day.

The surrounding Donner Summit area offers opportunity for downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and snow boarding at multiple locations. The lodge also offers discounted lift tickets at Sugar Bowl Ski Resort as well as shuttles to and from the slopes in the morning and afternoon.

The small town of Truckee is conveniently located fifteen minutes away and accessible by car or bus. This kitschy town is home to local shops and cafés, making it the perfect place to stroll through after a morning of skiing. Stop by Marty’s Café for a bowl of steel cut oatmeal or the Coffee Shop for a latte outdoors.

Rather than wasting your spring break (and the end of the skiing season) holed up at home, head on North to experience the Cal Lodge, one of the underrated perks of being a Berkeley student.
