Sausalito Fun

My spring break was a complete staycation this year. Seeing facebook posts and snapchats from friends spending their spring break in Cabo and Florida got me itching to get out of Berkeley, so I made a trip to Sausalito with friends who were joining me in the staycation. On the ferry back to San Francisco, the only thought that circled in my mind is why it took me so long to explore this amazing place, especially when it is so close and so easy to get to from Berkeley.

 

Sausalito? What’s that?

Sausalito was founded by Spanish explorers of the 18^th century and derives its name from Saucito, which means “little willow.” Sausalito is an extremely small town with only about 7,500 residents today. It is quiet and relaxed, and some people even claim that the charming town reminds them of the Mediterranean.

 

What is there to do in Sausalito?

Explore the art galleries and souvenir shops along Bridgeway

There are many small art galleries in Sausalito, all with their own unique character. In fact, one art gallery was dedicated entirely to Dr. Seuss’s work. If you are into the art scene, then they’re definitely worth checking out.

 

See the Floating Houses

Everyone is welcome to do a walking tour of the Sausalito houseboat community. Those of you who are into architecture may find this an especially interesting experience!

 

Bike along the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito

This bike trip will take about 2 to 3 hours, so if you are up for being outdoors and working out, what better way to do this than biking along the Golden Gate Bridge with breathtaking views! You can bring your own bike or rent a bike in San Francisco.

 

Or, take the ferry.

There are two ferries you can choose from:

Blue & Gold Fleet: This ferry can be taken from Pier 41 in San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf. The ferry ride will be approximately 30 to 35 minutes. The cost is $11 one-way for adults.

Golden Gate Ferries: This ferry can be taken from the Ferry Building in San Francisco’s Financial District (near Embarcadero BART). The ferry ride is about 25 minutes long. The cost is $7.85 one-way for adults.

 

Events in Sausalito

The annual Sausalito Art Festival is held over Labor Day weekend. Artists from all over the world come to this festival to feature their work.

Twice a year, the Industrial Center Building hosts Artists’ Open Studios. This takes place in May and December.

You can wait to go to Sausalito to attend these awesome events, but Sausalito is also a great place to just visit with friends and family for a relaxed, slow-paced day.
