If you think you know what recycling and fashion mean, think again. This Friday night the 2nd Annual Project Greenway Trashion Show will challenge your notion of what is garbage, what is wearable, and transform your idea of recycled clothing.

What is trashion? Trashion is a counter to the wastefulness of the fashion industry. It’s the big fad in the green sustainability movement that involves apparel and accessories made from trash, recycled items, or used items. “Upcycling” is the term – that is, making something worthless valuable again through innovative and artistic skill. It’s stylish environmentalism – the three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) revolutionized. Imagine soda can tabs, wrappers, plastic bags, cardboard, foil, newspaper not in your trashcan but on your body. The materials of trashion may seem uncomfortable and unwearable, but that’s the challenge for designers.

Here are just some of the possibilities of trashion:

Cal, of course, is a trendsetter in the green movement. The Project Greenway Trashion Show will feature the creative designs of 18 Cal students; contestants have been given one month to design up to two pieces of clothing and up to one accessory fitted on one or two models. The collaborating student groups – the Berkeley Student Food Collective, the Health Worker Program, the Residential Sustainability Program, ReUSE, The Local, and The LoopCycle – will be present to answer your questions on sustainability and what you can do to stay fashionably green. The event takes place from 10PM – 12AM during the Crossroads dining hall late night, so come by to see what’s trending in trashion!
