Although hot summer weather tends to drive people back into the sacred comfort of their air conditioned bedrooms, Pasadena was tittering with crowds as people began to line up in preparation for the 8th annual Make Music festival.
50,000 people of all ages (dressed aptly in what came to be referred to as Pasa-chella attire) poured into 20 city blocks worth of surrounding parks and lots to listen and dance to a total of 150 bands ranging from punk to smooth jazz.
According to the team behind the scenes, the event is meant to model the Fête de la Musique event that began in Paris in 1982 “as a way to celebrate music by making all genres accessible to all people and taking music to the streets”.
True to its word, Make Music revived the typically quiet, quaint streets of Pasadena.
Its powerful, eclectic energy thrummed deep into the dark as the night wrapped up in the heart of Old Town Pasadena.
Listening to a final band play from a balcony overlooking One Colorado, I said goodnight to another warm summer day coaxed by a sea of garden lights.
