Ode to Chicken and Waffles

This past Wednesday, I had one of the best food combinations of my life, and feeling generous, I want to share it with the rest of the world. The basic rundown of this deliciousness: 1) CHICKEN 2) WAFFLES 3) YUM.

When people heard that three of my best friends and I were road-tripping down to LA for Disneyland and some light celebrity-stalking, they informed us that we had to stop at Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles. We four Bay Area suburbia dwellers had never heard of this place, let alone even imagined that fried chicken could be eaten in the same bite as a waffle. Man, were we missing out.

Revelation: located at 1514 North Gower Street in Hollywood is a little bit of heaven on Earth. After fighting our way through LA traffic and monsoon-like weather, we finally found parking and made our way to Roscoe’s. Nerves began to creep in when we saw the burly security guard standing outside the restaurant (for what purpose he was there, we still don’t know…), but as we entered the dimly-lit building and smelled the chicken, any doubts we had instantly fried up (just like everything else in that amazing little eatery). We sat down, each ordered a #1 (Scoe’s 1/4 Chix prepared southern style, 2 waffles, their own private mix), and awaited the next phase of our lives to commence. As we were waiting, the Berkeley grad student at the table next to us (woot woot!) reinforced everything good we had heard about the restaurant. By this point, our stomachs were audibly impatient.

A few minutes later, the food arrived. Two generous pieces of fried chicken, two large waffles, two ice cream scoops of butter, and two mini jars of syrup magically fit on the plates in front of us. Our arteries had been clear for far too long, not a shred of guilt or regret passed through our minds as we savored every bite of Scoe’s chicken. For $10.20 a plate, we stayed full and happy for the remainder of the trip.

In case you couldn’t guess, I would highly recommend that everyone tries this meal at least once in their lifetime. Though this combination may take a few hours off of your life in health, it makes up for it by adding a few more in happiness and sensory satisfaction. Don’t eat breakfast, tie your hair back, keep your elbows off the table, and dig in!
