NorCal + SoCal equals…?
by Caliber Magazine on Mar, 16 2010By NorCal and SoCal experts, Sydney Lai and Jasleen Singh
California is a state. This is fact.
Northern California is hella cool. This is an opinion, though some people would argue that NorCal is much better than SoCal. For one, NorCal has UC Berkeley and the water supply. And SoCal has, well, the University of Spoiled Children and Hollywood. And the culture itself is different:
Hella. Cool.
If you’re on the look out for a NorCal cutie, perk your ears up because they’re the only ones who dare to say “hella”. However, asides from the way they talk, NorCal kids are easy to spot depending on what they are struttin’.
For NorCal girls, they like to keep it simple, wearing a top and jeans from American Eagle or the controversial Abercrombie & Fitch. However, thanks to San Francisco, the indie trend is flourishing in the rest of NorCal, but girls are starting to look like Prop 8 supporting Urban Outfitters.
The most common NorCal male stereotypes (not including the fashionable San Fran) are your skater, prep, bro, and that average guy with the T-shirt and jeans. While skaters wear skinny jeans with a shoelace for a belt, your prep will wear boot-cut jeans. While bros in NorCal is a dying breed, their muscle tees and sunglasses worn in the back of their heads easily spot them.
On the other hand…
Like, Totally Awesome!
Who doesn’t like sunglasses that take up your entire face and the beauty of a little bling on your hands, or your handbag? The glasses give you an aura of mystery and the bling makes anyone feel glamorous.
In SoCal we don’t have to adorn a fleece jacket the minute we step into the shade because the weather is simply amazing. They don’t call in 300 days of sunshine for nothing. We can actually diversify our style because we don’t have to cover up in a coat and boots the majority of the year. And of course this makes our fashion that much better.
Speaking of better things–our beaches are better, our boys are hotter and our nightlife is raunchier.
And of course our dialect makes a lot more sense. Attention everyone, freeways are nouns; therefore we must give the noun an article to differentiate it from say, an adjective. You merge onto the 5, not just 5. Saying 5 by itself makes the freeway look so lonely, and makes me want to say “5 what?”
Which stereotype prevails? Hella cool, laid-back liberals or Like-Totally-OMG-let’s catch some waves?

Note: Just because we’ve supplied a guy and a girl for NorCal and SoCal respectively, does not mean that one region is more masculine and one is more feminine. Though that could make an interesting article…
