Recently, one of my favorite activities is “spot the hipster” (psst, try the awesome hipster bingo card in our newest issue). While tabling on Sproul, falling asleep taking notes in class, or even walking around campus, I’ve seen them everywhere, ironic glasses and all. Extra points for dreadlocks.

But there are some places that resonate with indie attraction, drawing the hipsters in like flies to (ultra organic) honey. Except in this case, they’d definitely be the last things I’d be looking for.

Noise Pop is an annual indie festival in San Francisco, featuring music, art, film, and a unique Culture Club that exhibits the creative process and attitude of DIY (“do it yourself”). For 19 years, it has showcased a number of talents that have gone on to receive mainstream attention, such as The White Stripes, Death Cab for Cutie, Rilo Kiley, and The Shins. In the past, it has also housed underground legends like Bob Mould, X, Frank Black (of The Pixies), and Yoko Ono and The Plastic Ono Band (hopefully performing something other than “Firework”). Think TED Talks for the artistically inclined.

And this year is no exception. Noise Pop is back in San Francisco from February 26th to March 3rd, bringing with it the best in photography, film, and artists you’ve probably never even heard of, all coming together to guarantee a truly unparalleled aesthetic experience. So whether you’re a hipster (in which case, you’re probably denying it right now), an artist in need of inspiration, or simply looking for the next big thing, Noise Pop is the event for you. Just please, leave the infinity scarves at home.
