Attention midterm-stressed college students—close those textbooks, put on those sweats, and start poppin’ some popcorn because new shows have come to Netflix. To put it simply, Netflix in October is like a really awesome trick-or-treat bag—an assortment of old favorites, new showstoppers, various flavors of sweet, and random classics you can’t ignore.
In light of the fact that Netflix is removing staples like “Mean Girls” – so not fetch – “Law & Order,” and “Ghostbusters” – who you gonna call?—I thought it necessary for the sanity of all TV-lovers to find temporary replacements. So, for all you Netflix-ers out there, here is my top list of the best new shows and movies coming out this month—a little treat for everyone.
TV
“Gilmore Girls,” The Complete Series
“So it’s a show? It’s a lifestyle. It’s a religion,” a quote stated by Rory and Lorelei, is probably the single, most accurate way of describing the brilliance that is “Gilmore Girls.” Already, thousands of die-hard “Gilmore Girls” fans – including myself – are drinking abnormal amounts of coffee and rekindling heated debates over which one of Rory’s boyfriends was better – Jess, obviously – because the return of this show is comparable to that of Burger King’s Chicken Fries: epic and mind-blowing.
It is, in my opinion, the biggest release of this month, or ever. Devoted fans and newcomers alike can rejoice in the return of Lorelei’s fast-talking nonsense, Luke’s sarcasm, and the Gilmores’ meddling, all centered on Rory’s experiences of high school, college, romance, and missteps. “Gilmore Girls” is the perfect combination of dramatic, funny, and heart-warming that will at the very least keep you entertained, if not invested. True to the theme song, where “Gilmore Girls” leads, we will follow.
Other noteworthy TV shows worth watching:
“How I Met Your Mother,” Season 9
“Parks and Recreation,” Season 6
MOVIES
“Sleepless in Seattle”
And all the hopeless romantics literally can’t even. Possibly the quintessential rom-com, “Sleepless in Seattle” will now be available to all those who love love – and Meg Ryan, because she’s awesome. Revisiting a time when people actually took the time to write heartfelt letters to one another instead of texting, Facebooking, and Instagramming, “Sleepless” is perfect for rainy days, lonely hearts, and girls’ nights-in. And yeah, it might be cheesy, but even the cynic in me melts a bit while watching the love story of Annie and Sam unfold. So to all watching “Sleepless in Seattle” and questioning whether or not to order in that pad thai, remember this:
You’re welcome.
After all that, if your heart still desires rom-coms, then you can turn to
“Romeo + Juliet” – oh hello young Leo – and “The Wedding Planner.”
“Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle”
Alright, this one’s not just for the boys, but anyone who loves badass ladies on a mission. Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu as Natalie, Dylan, and Alex are the perfect combination of beauty, brains, and girl power as they go undercover amidst murder and theft. Funny and an easy watch, “Charlie’s Angels” is always an option for senseless entertainment.
“School of Rock”
Anyone looking for a good laugh will love Jack Black in the classic “School of Rock.” Jack Black plays Dewey Finn, a poor and desperate guitarist who wants nothing more in life than to be a rock star. When he finagles his way into being a substitute teacher, Dewey transforms his students from shy, insecure nerds to rock stars with attitude. Complete with random and hilarious asides of singing and a great cast, “School of Rock” is not only a comedy, but also a charming story of friendship, fun, and “sticking it to the man.”
“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”
One of the newest movie releases this month, “Catching Fire” is the second installment of the “Hunger Games” trilogy and a captivating book-to-movie adaptation. Watch as Katniss and Peeta encounter new obstacles after their controversial victory in the 74th Hunger Games. Gripping, action-packed, and dramatic, “Catching Fire” is a must-see, not only because of Jennifer Lawrence.
“Carrie”
For all you Halloween lovers and horror movie enthusiasts, Netflix has very kindly added “Carrie” to their October lineup. Grab a friend and a blanket, and watch in horror as Carrie unleashes her telekinetic powers and terror on her town after getting humiliated at the senior prom. This is a great way to spend a night of Halloween weekend in.
Lastly, make sure to save the date for January 1, not only because it’s New Year’s Day, but because it is also the official Netflix release of…
“Friends”
It doesn’t matter if you’ve been living under a rock, if you haven’t seen the show in awhile, or if you’re a die-hard fan, because no matter what, “Friends” coming to Netflix is nothing short of a really. Big. Deal. Nothing beats Ross and Rachel’s relationship —they were “on a break!”— Chandler’s lovable sarcasm, Monica’s neuroticism, Phoebe’s “Smelly Cat” performances, and Joey’s “how you doin?” All are perfect for hysterical laughs and genuine moments of love, many shenanigans, and most importantly, friendship.
Starting January 1, “Friends” will be there for you, especially when the rain starts to pour.

Ditto Janice, ditto.
For the person looking for a good laugh, for the hopeless romantic waiting on love, for the thrill-seekers and time-passers, and most importantly for those who will always make time to watch TV – Netflix and I have your back.
Happy binge watching!
