Justin Bieber’s Week Off

by on Mar, 15 2013

We’ve all had some tough weeks in the past. Those days when you catch the flu right before your midterm or miss the deadline for a project by mere minutes. When more coffee runs through your body than blood or you walk around in an eternal haze of sleep deprivation and confusion. But then again, maybe I’m being a bit melodramatic. After all, no one’s ever compared me to Lindsay Lohan.

Justin Bieber’s having one of those weeks. Or maybe months, actually. Let’s call it something between a mid-life crisis and a teenage meltdown. He’s been photographed flashing gang signs and smoking marijuana, in between his bouts of yelling profanities at the paparazzi and conveniently “forgetting” to wear shirts. I mean, what else are you going to do to occupy your time when you’re not busy being two hours late to shows, passing out onstage, or even canceling tour dates completely, right?

After being called out for his bad behavior, the Biebs took the liberty of responding to the allegations with a post on Instagram, complete with an artsy black and white photo of the back of his head and more than a few mentions of his career accomplishments. Throw in a couple references to “believe” and a “haters gonna hate” attitude and that was pretty much the whole 300 words (besides a reference to Lindsay Lohan’s 2013 earnings which he reportedly removed). Good thinking JB.

And no, before you say anything, I’m not at all a Bieber hater. Like my fellow blogger Taran, I actually think his story is quite inspirational and that (all Canadian jokes aside) he’s the real deal. His sound and voice have both matured over the four years he’s been in the spotlight and at age 19 (I’m still coming to terms with the fact that he is 15 days older than me), his best years are presumably still ahead of him.

I guess what I’m saying is that everyone deserves to have a meltdown once in a while. I had one just the other day when I picked the wrong sized cap for my coffee at Peet’s for the millionth time in a row (dimensional awareness has never been my strong point). Justin’s is just more publicized. So I still have hope for the kid (if he’s older than me, can I still call him that?) and his future in the industry if he can take down the teen “swaggie” another level and make the transition to serious artist. He might be down for now, but he’ll be back soon enough, bigger and better than ever. Just look Robert Downey Jr. Or Alec Baldwin. Or half of The X Factor judging panel, for that matter.

In the meantime, I’ll be substituting Bieber’s “Boyfriend” for Timberlake’s “Mirrors.”

I guess Tumblr was right. There can only be one Justin.
