(Healthily) Snack Your Way Through Finals
by MackenzieO on Dec, 13 2013Trying to keep up with the pressure that looming finals can put on our shoulders can cause us to either skip meals or stress eat and not sleep. This takes a toll on our young bodies, which are often vessels of caffeine, as we attempt to cram for the next week of hell. However, if you wanted some easy tips to stay healthy (and sane) this finals week, Becky Stifter, founder and president of on-campus club SweatPink Berkeley, has some great and totally doable tips to help you stay healthy so you can jump into Winter Break feeling great.
Becky’s tips:
“Snack well. With extra cramming for exams, our sense of mindful eating goes right out the door. Make sure you’re listening to your body, and eating because you’re hungry, not because you’re stressed. If the latter occurs, that’s okay. Don’t get down on yourself, just be prepared. Keep healthy snacks handy, so you aren’t reaching for a cookie…or ten. Some of my favorite healthy snacks include the Trek Trail Mix from Trader Joe’s. It has pistachios, cranberries, almonds, cashews, and dark chocolate chunks. This is a great balance of sweet and salty, without any added sugar. I also love to pair fruit with almond butter or any nut butter. You can take a banana or apple and 1-2 tablespoons of nut butter for a perfectly balanced snack. Not a fan of nutty food? That’s okay. Keep fruit, veggies, cheese, and deli meat stocked in your fridge for healthy snacking.

Stay hydrated. Keeping your body hydrated will increase your study performance because it will help you focus on the task at hand, and keep your body balanced. Aim to drink your body weight divided by two (i.e 140/2=70 ounces) each day to maintain proper hydration. Keep tea and coffee handy but avoid adding a lot of sugar or creamer because they not only add empty calories but also set you up for a crash later on.
Two tips: snack well and stay hydrated!”
