The modern-day fairy tale trend is very in this season, from ABC’s successful drama Once Upon a Time to the upcoming film adaptation based around the Sleeping Beauty villain, Maleficent.
But have you ever wondered what our favorite storybook characters would be like if they were exposed to the scariest plot twist of all time – life in the real world?
Artist Rachael Wise was inspired by her love of comic books and interest in fairy tales to create a series of fairy tale-inspired pieces that are grounded in reality.
The 25-year-old graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design says that her main inspiration for the pieces was humor:
“I think I have a slightly twisted sense of humor. I also tend to get annoyed at stories that end too neatly, with heroines that always seem to need help. This whole series actually started with the drawing of the Little Mermaid. I kept thinking to myself, ‘Why is she waiting around, wishing to be different? Just do it yourself.’ That got me thinking about what would happen to the other fairy tale heroes and heroines. I kind of wanted to rewrite their stories, and untie some of the lose ends of classic fairy tales. Who says you can push Cinderella and Snow White around? Who says Peter Pan can’t be young forever?”
