Easter Candy Galore and More
by Avery Barnes on Apr, 07 2012
The time for giant chocolate bunnies, Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs, Peeps, and jelly beans has come. Whether you’re a fan of Easter or not, we could all use an excuse to stuff ourselves with candy.
As a child I would eagerly anticipate the Easter Bunny’s arrival. Wondering how he travels to and enters each home, where his Easter-basket-making headquarters is, and where he gets all those eggs from. If you ask me, Santa’s got nothing on the Easter Bunny.
While the complexities of the Easter Bunny’s persona are still a thing of captivating mystery for me, luckily I have matured a bit (hard to believe, I know) and more often find myself reflecting on what the Easter Bunny symbolizes: the coming of spring, and more importantly, new life.
Over the years, the Easter Bunny has taught me few a things about life and myself. And so, in tribute of an often overlooked and underestimated furry friend, here’s what years of Easter egg hunts has left me with: You can’t always get as many eggs as you’d like, but there’s always one for you. You may be too short to reach the eggs perched on tree branches, too big to crawl into the small spaces concealing eggs, or too slow to beat your opponents to the eggs that lay in plain sight. We have all been overcome by such distressing grief. One minute you’re so excited to hunt for eggs, the next you’re ready to give up and sulk with your eggless Easter basket, when you finally come across an egg that seems to be perfectly placed, just for you. Every year, no matter what, the Easter Bunny leaves an egg you can reach, an egg he delivered just for you. And it seems that with each coming year, you’re able to reach more and more eggs. But your basket wasn’t always so full, the Easter Bunny doesn’t give you all your eggs at once, he reveals them in time. And each year, whether you have been naughty or nice, there’s an egg for you to find.
And so, with the plethora of pretty dresses, colorful eggs, bright and vibrant colors, mouthfuls of chocolate, and joyful family gatherings, comes the heartwarming reminder of forgiveness and God’s ultimate plan. While this time of year can arouse bittersweet emotions, the love of the Easter season outshines all else.
Easter symbolizes the sacrifice and promise made in our favor. And with the coming of this season I am reminded that despite the times I jealously glared at another kid’s very full Easter basket, or even brought myself to sneak one of their eggs into my own basket, I am forgiven by a tragically great sacrifice. A sacrifice imposed on the sinless by my misdoings, a sacrifice that allows me to live a guiltless life, a sacrifice that shows me God’s love, and a sacrifice that has enabled me to love him in return. This is indeed a Good Friday.
And so, this Easter Sunday in the midst of enjoying baskets full of candy, I hope you, Christian or not, remember God’s love.
