Let’s be honest, twitter is about the closest we’ll ever get to interacting with our favorite celebrities. It becomes eerily personal, the relationship between the tweeter and the follower. So when an argument takes place on the site, it increases traffic and attention, and stirs up a lot of talk — fans just can’t help but be curious of what their idols are capable of saying in those 140 character limits.

In the past two weeks, a few particularly amusing conflicts have taken place on the social media platform between some well-known celebrities. If you’ve been out of the loop, here are three you might want to be caught up on:

1. Ariana Grande vs. Jai Brooks

Famous for her roles on Nickelodeon, 20 year old Ariana Grande released her first album, “Yours Truly” in late August, and has been climbing the music charts ever since. A particular fan favorite from her new CD is “Almost is Never Enough”, a duet sung with the lovable Nathan Sykes, a talented young vocalist of the Wanted. Ever since the music video for this song was released, which features the two making overwhelming amounts of flirtatious eye contact, news broke that Ariana Grande had ended her year long romance with Jai Brooks, member of a lesser-known Australian boy group, and had begun seeing Nathan Sykes soon afterwards.

Both Jai Brooks and Ariana Grande seemed to have split on good term — that is, until Jai himself released some serious accusations to the twitter-sphere a few days ago.

Otherwise, I’ll summarize it for you: Jai Brooks accuses Ariana Grande of cheating on him with Nathan Sykes. He even addresses Nathan Sykes directly, saying, “when you hold [Ariana’s] hand you better hold it tight, because she is my world”. Sure, he had trouble articulating his heartache and made more than a few typos, but let’s cut some slack for the 16 year old.

The following morning, Ariana tweeted out her response to the harsh allegations Jay made public:

Brooks, who probably just should log off twitter at this point, replied:

So that’s that. What does Ariana’s current beau have to say about this whole thing? Well, Nathan Sykes commented on Ariana’s response, “Always classy. Always a lady, always respectable. I think it’s such a compliment that people have to lie so viciously about her or for there to be anything bad said about her. Such class and sophistication — which is why I absolutely adore her.”

I’m going to have to agree with Nathan on this one.

2. Miley Cyrus vs. Sinéad O’Connor

Last week, Sinéad O’Connor, a 46 year old Irish singer-songwriter who has battled with depression and bipolar disorder, addressed an open letter to Miley Cyrus via twitter, trying to give her thoughtful motherly advice based off of her own success in the music industry.

This excerpt sums it up: “The music business doesn’t give a shit about you, or any of us. They will prostitute you for all you are worth, and cleverly make you think it’s what YOU wanted.. and when you end up in rehab as a result of being prostituted, ‘they’ will be sunning themselves on their yachts in Antigua, which they bought by selling your body and you will find yourself very alone.” The original letter has since been deleted, but the text can be found on various news sites.

In response, Cyrus put O’Connor on blast by tweeting a screenshot of a series tweets made by O’Connor during one of her very frightening and very serious mental breakdowns with the caption, “Before Amanda Bynes…There was…”

Ever since, Sinéad O’Connor has sent out three more letters, demanding an apology from Cyrus. She may just be trying to claim her 15 minutes of fame, but it was out of line for Miley to disrespect someone who she claims is an inspiration to her.

3. Jimmy Kimmel vs. Kanye West

Or, more like, Kanye West versus himself.

In an episode of “The Jimmy Kimmel Show”, Kimmel parodies an interview West did with BBC Radio 1, having a little boy recreate the interview. The video highlights some of his best quotes- my personal favorite being:

“I brought 10 years of product that has added to humanity. And now, where’s the culture at?! So then, I scream, and I’m sitting in the middle of it. Whether I’m at a dinner with Anna Wintour, or I’m at a listening session with Pusha, or me and Virgil are in Rome giving designs to Fendi over and over and getting our designs knocked down. We brought the leather jogging pants six years ago to Fendi, and they said, ‘No.’ How many m************ you done seen with a jogging pant?”

Kimmel’s mocking clearly did not sit well with West. Here are a few of the more appropriate all-caps snippets from the twitter rampage that ensued:

It’s impossible to take anything Kanye tweets seriously, so this whole feud was just purely comical.

Jimmy Kimmel, the funny guy he is, responded:

He then proceeded to promote that night’s episode of his show, saying he would “tell the whole story about Kanye West tonight on the show tonight”. Which leads me to my next point…

What I want to know is, how many of these twitter wars are based off of real conflicts? Are they just publicity stunts? First of all, why and how did Ariana Grande become involved with such a no-name YouTube star like Jai Brooks? Ever since the two made their relationship public, and their break up even more public, Jai Brooks’ name was plastered across many major entertainment news sites. Furthermore, although Kanye West is infamous for being outrageous on twitter (as well as in life in general), the conflict between him and Jimmy Kimmel caused a hilarious commotion online, conveniently resulting in a lot of viewers tuning in to Kimmel’s episode with Kanye earlier this week.

Twitter has become such an important platform in media today, becoming one of the main ways to advertise and reach out to an audience — it’s hard not to believe that a lot of these twitter fights are staged.
