On Friday, November 8, typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines and left the bodies of countless men, women, and children in the streets of Tacloban, where the storm hit the hardest. Haiyan, the strongest typhoon in recorded history, left homes destroyed and villages flooded with debris and distress. Communications are lagging, making it impossible to know the exact extent of the damage, but government officials estimate that Haiyan has killed about 10 thousand people in one province alone.

UC Berkeley student groups have united during this tragedy to help provide relief and aid to the Philippines through the #Act4thePhilippines campaign.

The #Act4thePhilippines campaign is a fundraising initiative by the seven Pilipino organizations on campus (PASAE, PAA, PASS, PAHC, KAPWA, and {m}aganda), Gawad Kalinga @ Berkeley, ASUC, and RHA with a goal of $10,000 which they will be donating to the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON). They have broken up their campaign into different phases, the first of which is ribbon selling. The ribbons are sold on a sliding scale starting at $2. Corrina Calanoc, a dedicated member of PAA, said, “On the first day of our campaign, I made 55 ribbons to sell at the Pil-org (Pilipino organization) tables on Sproul, and sold them all within a couple hours. Since then, various organizations on campus have volunteered to help make or sell ribbons for the campaign.” They sign up through Google Forms online and then are either given the materials to make the ribbons, or are given ribbons to sell. Already one week and one day into the campaign, #Act4thePhilippines has raised over $2,600 from ribbon donations, one classroom donation, and online donations.

Ribbons will be sold everyday on Sproul at a table located either in front of Sather Gate, or across from GBC, from 10AM-2PM, weather permitting.
