And again, you’ve made it. Tomorrow’s Friday. Caliber knows you don’t plan too far ahead and that you’re too broke to travel, so we’ve taken the liberty of selecting some great events around campus to check out!

Music and protest, panel discussion

Waldo Martin, professor; Kim Nalley, jazz and blues vocalist, and Ph.D. Candidate; Mavis Staples, singer; and Chris Strachwitz, founder and president of Arhoolie Records arrive in Sutardja Dai Hall Thursday at noon to examine the unique role of music in protest. This event is part of the 50th year anniversary of the Free Speech Movement and put on by the On the Same Page program.

 

The Great Debate (Cal Dems  v.  BCR), political debate

DATES:  10/30/2014, 7:00pm — 8:00pm
LOCATION: Anna Head Alumnae Hall

“The Great Debate is an annual event hosted by [Cal Democrats and Berkeley College Republicans] that provide a space for spirited debate on some of the most pressing issues facing our state and community.” The two student political groups will be covering pressing topics of our time. This debate also falls conveniently ahead of the November 4th election.

Hallowe’en Open Mic, community

DESCRIPTION / WHY YOU SHOULD GO: Berkeley’s poetry slam society, CalSLAM has candy for this event, which should be “a spooky time.” Those interested in reading — Hallowe’en or non-Hallowe’en themed — can sign up at the start of the show.

 

Monster Bash, dance

LOCATION: Foothill Dining Commons

With a live DJ, a chocolate fountain, a photo booth, and a costume contest, the 8th annual Monster Bash will be a prime spot to hit if you’re in Unit 4. Otherwise, it’s a bit of a trek, but still worth grabbing some food and checking out prior to Friday’s real festivities. Don’t forget to pack a costume — if it’s a good one, you may be eligible for a prize!

Eyes Wide Shut, film

PRICE:  $5.50 with Cal ID

The PFA has been pretty spot on his semester, offering audiences a selection of experimental and classic films, including a Stanley Kubrick series. This “Special Hallowe’en screening” suggests wearing a Hallowe’en mask for the director’s 1999 erotic thriller, Eyes Wide Shut starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. The film follows a couple through the trials and tribulations of their relationship.
