7 Ways to Make Use of Time Between Classes

As Cal students, we’ve all experienced those awkward gaps between classes. There are many perks to attending a large university like UC Berkeley, but sometimes you also have to pay the price for attending such a great school – class schedules aren’t always ideal, especially for underclassmen. However, there are various ways to get around this minor nuisance. Take a look at the following suggestions, and hopefully you can make good use of the gaps between your classes!

1. Find Friends With the Same Breaks

Once the semester gets going and is in full-force, you will find that it becomes extremely difficult to meet up with friends, particularly during weekdays. So, what better way to spend these times than cooling your tired head by chilling with friends? Get in the habit of reaching out to your friends at the beginning of each semester to determine if you guys share any gaps!

2. Go To Office Hours

Office hours are a great way to productively use the time between your classes. You can attend office hours to clear up any confusing class material, or simply to connect with your professors or GSIs. Office hours don’t typically require a lot of time, and thus, would be perfect for those short one-hour gaps between classes.

3. Study and Catch Up On Work

If your gap is longer than an hour, you can definitely use this time to study for classes and catch up on some reading. Figure out which classes would be most appropriate for you to study for during this time period and bring the appropriate books to campus that day.

4. EAT

Eating is an essential part to making it through the day and maintaining your health. Eat a nutritious and filling meal by trying out various restaurants and cafes during your free time between classes. Berkeley has so many great options, ranging from Thai food to fusion cuisines.

5. Extracurricular Activities

If you are involved in a lot of student organizations at Berkeley, it might get difficult to manage your time with your heavy school load to worry about. Use these gaps to deal with small tasks and errands. And if you have longer breaks, consider taking on volunteer opportunities around campus.

6. Sleep

If your gap is long enough for you to sneak in a nap, then go for it! Make up for some of that sleep debt you’ve been accumulating throughout the semester.

7. Just Relax

Why not take advantage of this time to just unplug for a bit? Honestly, we spend hours cooped up in classrooms all day. Therefore, it would be a nice change if you took the time to take a walk around campus and enjoy spending time by yourself!
