10 Ways to Transition Your Summer Wardrobe to Fall

As the temperature cools and the leaves begin to change color, something else inevitably must change as well: your wardrobe. This shift need not be dramatic, however, as it is easy to take staple summer pieces, as well as clothes that you already own, and incorporate them into your fall wardrobe.

1. Pair lightweight scarves with nearly any outfit

Lightweight, bold scarves can double in both summer and fall and can be paired with any outfit as long as the top half is plain so as not to distract from the bold color or pattern of the scarf. For example, you can pair your summer scarves with a plain t-shirt, jeans and a long sweater.

2. Repurpose summer dresses by adding a blazer or jacket

To transform your summer dress into a wearable piece for fall, simply add a blazer over your dress for more formal events, or a jacket or cozy wool sweater for a casual night out. If your dresses are bright, as many summer dresses are, be sure that your jacket or blazer is a neutral color. A leather jacket is also a great investment, as it can easily become a staple piece for fall and winter.

3. Trade sandals for short ankle boots

Unfortunately, the strappy sandals that are a summer staple must go with the arrival of cooler weather, but it is still too warm for long riding boots. This is where short ankle boots come in. Black or brown ankle boots work with almost every outfit from pants to skirts and dresses, and are perfect for transitioning your summer outfit into a fall one.

4. Trade shorter-length skirts for maxi skirts

If you are not quite ready to live in jeans just yet and are missing wearing your summer skirts, maxi skirts are the perfect in-between piece that can be worn in both summer and fall. Pair a maxi skirt with sneakers and a leather or jean jacket for a comfortable fall outfit.

5. Pair denim shorts with a blazer or cardigan

If the weather is warm enough but slightly chilly, as it has been in Berkeley recently, simply throw on a cardigan or blazer over a t-shirt and pair it with denim short-shorts, a summer staple. Accessorize the outfit by layering different sized necklaces.

6. Layer cable knit sweaters over skirts and dresses

Another way to repurpose your summer skirts and dresses is to pair them with chunky, cozy cable knit sweaters. These outfits are especially perfect for slightly cooler fall days.

7. Pair a cropped sweater with shorts or pants

Cropped sweaters are another great summer-to-fall transitional piece and work perfectly with summer shorts or pants.

8. Continue to wear white clothing

Just because it is fall does not mean that you must store away all the white pieces from summer in your wardrobe. In fact, a trend for fall 2014 is to continue wearing white clothing as a staple piece to tie an outfit together. White jeans are especially stylish and functional, can be paired with almost any shirt, and are often more lightweight than blue jeans.

9. Pair a shirtdress with sneakers or wedges

Continue to wear your summer shirtdress by pairing it with either sneakers or wedges instead of sandals. Shirtdresses are the ultimate transitional piece, since if the weather is cool you can simply roll down the sleeves, and vice versa if it is warm.

10. Pair summer dresses with tights

Another way to transition summer dresses into fall outfits is by simply adding a pair of tights to your outfit for those transitional fall days.
