Upheaval 2011: Additions to MLK Student Union

Dec 27, 2010 No Comments

Get ready for next semester with more space than ever to accommodate the eat-study-sleep cycle of Cal students! According to the Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC) Newsletter, four new businesses will be coming to the Student Union in time for the spring 2011 semester. In addition, two businesses will be renovated and operating in 2011.

Our digest summarizes the delicious updates:

NEW BUSINESSES:

Vietnamese Food Service, owned by a Cal graduate: Remember the “Saigon Eats” booth that dominated lines of students during the “Taste of Berkeley” earlier this fall? You’ll find its permanent residence in Lower Sproul Plaza this spring.

Subway Sandwiches, currently across the street from the Student Union on Bancroft Way, has calculated their demand and looks forward to opening a new franchise concessions co-owned by local small business operators in the Food Court.

Kaplan Test Prep, a famous and helpful name to thousands of Cal students in exams and admissions since 1990, will be opening a classroom in the ASUC Mall off of Lower Sproul Plaza. Various classes offerings will conveniently take place at the Student Union on the 4th floor.

Fresh Choice Organic Restaurant, a new name we have yet to try out. It will be occupying the space that was formerly the Naia Lounge. Responsible journalism tells us that it is not affiliated with the nearby Maoz Vegetarian, though they are managed by the same owner.

RENOVATED BUSINESSES:

The Coffee Spot in the Bear’s Lair will include a new Tacqueria. Coffee + Tacos = Brunch!

Tully’s Coffee, the kiosk located in the lobby of the Student Union off of Upper Sproul Plaza, will install a new door from the plaza on the south side (thereby increasing access for lazy legs), plus more electrical outlets and sitting space.

These updates were approved by the ASUC Store Operations Board in early December 2010.
