UC Berkeley Ranked #22 in National Universities

A few days ago U.S. News issued their annual report, Best Colleges 2011, ranking public and private colleges and universities across the country, by category and score based on such criteria as acceptance rate, graduation rate, endowment funds and all the other things that matter… to hopeful parents of pre-college kids.

In the National Universities Rankings, Berkeley stands at #22 (down one notch from last year) and continues to be the #1 public university, trailing behind the Ivies and “hidden” Ivies such as Emory and Georgetown.

You can view the Free Version of Best Colleges here.

Interesting things to note:

  • After Berkeley, USC and Carnegie Mellon are tied at #23, with UCLA at #25.
  • Tied with UCLA at #25 are University of Virginia and the lesser known Wake Forest University in North Carolina.
  • Under ‘Other Facts about UC Berkeley’: “Berkeley is well known as a hub of liberal student activity: the Free Speech Movement—a 1964 student protest at Berkeley in response to the administration’s attempt to remove student political groups from campus—gained widespread national attention. Distinguished alumni include former U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren, Olympic gold medalist Jonny Moseley, and actor John Cho of the Harold and Kumar films.”
  • Apparently Berkeley has no mission statement, which I find funny because last time I checked, University of California had their mission stated here.
