Music Spotlight: Puella Trio

You might deny it, but classical music was probably the reigning form of (non-indigenous) music until the invention of electronic music in the 20th century.
That doesn’t mean classical music is dead now, not with world-renowned “popera” (pop + opera) groups like Celtic Woman, let alone the subject of our post – the aspiring Puella Trio, an all-girls chamber ensemble from the Czech Republic.
Formed in 2003 and featuring long-of-hair, cool-of-name, and full-of-talent members, Puella Trio at first glance looks like a get-together of three fairy tale princesses come to make songbird music.
[Haydn] Gypsy Rondo feat. Puella Trio
Quite the opposite. I was pretty much shocked after watching the above video – the Youtube link to this week’s music track. Puella Trio performed a cover of “Gypsy Rondo” composed by Joseph Haydn, at the House of Brno Philharmony.
I play the piece on piano and violin, so I know the music is fast. Though presto in Haydn’s time meant more of a galloping speed, Puella Trio made the “Gypsy Rondo” a marathon event – in a very good way with a very big finish.
No wonder they have amassed numerous awards such as 2nd prize from the Maria Yudina Competition in St. Petersburg and an Honourable Mention from Beethoven’s Hradec.

(None; it’s instrumental music, you silly rabbit.)
