I’m confused. How exactly does changing your profile picture on Facebook raise awareness against child abuse?

I joined the bandwagon anyway, since it takes a lot of willpower not to show the world your favorite childhood memories when everyone else is: “Hey! Arthur?! That’s my favorite cartoon too! OMG this is why we’re FB friends!”

After all, if not for a specific cause, it is still fun to see what others are picking as their top TV shows and comics, and even more fun to recognize rare characters that you haven’t seen for a decade or two.

For a quick read on the futility of the viral campaign, see this nifty article from The Daily What.

Facebook’s viral campaigns are not unique to promoting awareness against child abuse. In the past, we saw girls posting bra colors and suggestive statuses such as “I like it on… [handbag location],” supposedly to raise awareness of breast cancer. At least it was fun to keep the guys guessing.
