Did You Know Tom Anderson is a Cal Bear?by Denise Lee on Oct, 07 2012
Better known as “MySpace Tom,” Tom Anderson is the co-founder and former president of MySpace, and if you ever had a MySpace account in the 7th grade before Facebook was a thing, he was your very first friend.
He is also a UC Berkeley graduate. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in English and Rhetoric, and is one example of how the major you choose now could prove to have little relevance to your eventual career, but also, of course, that you could very well find success in other ways.
He launched MySpace with his co-founder in 2003 and left his position as the company’s president in 2009. While MySpace has dwindled in the midst of other predominant social networks, Anderson has made substantial achievements in the advancement and popularity of cyber social networking. And every time (let’s hope, not often) you see a picture of someone taking that picture in front of the mirror and you can see the camera, you’ll think about MySpace.
Where is Tom now: MySpace Tom remains present and active in the social networking realm, and appears to have reaped the rewards of his MySpace heyday: in the “about” portion of his Twitter page, he writes, “enjoying being retired.”
As for MySpace, there are currently plans in the works to revamp and revive the website, which will not focus on social networking, but instead, play up its prevalence in the music world. The new version of the website won’t intend to compete with other social networks, like Twitter and Facebook, but function alongside them. Reportedly, Justin Timberlake is involved in the re-launch; he’s also featured quite a bit in the promotional video. Check it out here: https://new.myspace.com/play
