Chalk Ads in Classrooms and more

Alright it’s Tuesday, and I was supposed to be blogging about graffiti when I thought of those poorly penned, graffiti-like chalk messages adorning the corners of classroom blackboards.

So they’re far from being vandalism, but I actually had a professor last semester who would have a sort of a semi-weekly morning ritual erasing all of those free club promos on the blackboard he was about to use.

How else do campus organizations get your attention? Through in-your-face flyers? Or through — our personal favorite — free food?

We thought we’d continue on with the ruthless-club-promotion tradition for the time being, starting with Caliber‘s club feature for these first few weeks: The Music Connection, a music tutoring club on campus.

For any Berkeley student who is willing and able to give free music lessons (instrumental or vocal) to K-12 students in the area, The Music Connection is currently accepting applications until Sept. 10 through its website here.

Here’s a plus: the application process is short. You don’t need to be a music major; just provide contact information and short “I-am-awesome-and-helpful” answers.

Prospective tutors can choose their preferences from the options:

  • Type of music: piano, flute, trumpet, clarinet, violin, viola, vocal…
  • Time of tutoring: in-class or after-school
  • Place of tutoring: a Berkeley school site (AC transit for the win…)
  • Type of tutoring: group or one-on-one
  • Time commitment: usually 1 hour/wk

The Music Connection coordinates with the Berkeley Unified School District and Berkeley School Volunteers to bring music to K-12 students.
