Haas Pavilion will be laughs and applause on Friday, April 29th at 7:30 p.m. as the dynamic and crowd-pleasing Cal Band takes the stage to present their 2011 Spring Showcase. Instead of performing the traditional Pregame show that gets Cal fans like you on their feet, the members of the Cal Band are showcasing their stellar talents in a different way! Come out to hear your favorite halftime tunes, and let the Band entertain you with a variety of performances. From choreographed dance numbers and rock bands to trombone quartets and comedy skits, these diverse acts will satisfy everyone’s tastes. In addition to the entertainment for the event, Cal Band will also be holding a raffle with one-of-a-kind items that include a volleyball signed by the women’s team, a football signed by Coach Tedford, and a brand new authentic swim team parka.
Why attend? This 240-member band, under the direction of Robert Calonico, performs not only at athletic competitions, but also at campus events, spirit rallies and various other engagements in the Bay Area ranging from weddings to charity walks. It is unique when compared to other college marching bands because it is student-managed and operated. The cost of maintaining this important campus tradition and asset is rising; funding, however, is not keeping pace. More than ever before, the Cal Band is dependent on donations and charitable contributions—currently, less than 20% of the money needed to support the Band’s activities comes from the University. In the last year, the Band has been forced to limit spending on many spirit functions such as road performances with the football team. These dire budget circumstances, combined with a surge of student enthusiasm (and talent), have inspired the production of the Cal Band Spring Showcase. All proceeds from this event go directly to supporting the Band.
The Spring Showcase is sure to be a spirited, one-of-a-kind event combining tradition with originality. Come out, have a great time, and support the Cal Band!
