Bec’s Bistro, the Shattuck Grand Opening

The mayor, music, and macchiatos: all of these were alive and kicking at the April 15th official grand opening of Bec’s Bistro on Shattuck. Replacing the long-standing Beckett’s Irish Pub and Restaurant, Bec’s Bistro founds itself on being an entertainment experience, displaying a sophisticated restaurant layout comprised of separate upstairs/downstairs bars and live DJs. On this night, the crowd was laid-back and stylish, and the atmosphere remained upbeat while DJ Sweet T and B Fresh made their rounds with a variety of dance and electronic music for the background.

Owner, Jean-Yves Duperret, provided homemade chocolate to his patrons, and our party of about a dozen people had a lot of this delicious, lemon spiced delight to go around. Bec’s sliders were easily the favorite of the night; reasonably priced for a choice of two, four or ten flavor-packed portions. The menu here is made up of a simple two-sided spread, composed of small plates of salmon, west coast ceviche, chipotle portobello taco saga, flat bread pizzettas, salads and soups, just to name a few. Something unique to the establishment were the BEC house fries, miniature versions of a traditional french frie but basked in blends of garlic, parmesan and herbs–you’ll want to pop them like candy. For the dessert enthusiasts, Bec’s also offers hot chocolate fondant, country apple tarte and a seasonal fruit plate-coulis on its menu.

Word spread during the night that the mayor of Berkeley himself, Tom Bates, was on hand for the opening earlier in the day. For our entire duration there, new patrons were continually seen arriving at the restaurant’s entrance, and there was an unmistakeable vibe of excitement in the air. Music, food and the friendly staff all came together in harmony for a great combination topping an incredible night.

Check the calendar on their website for the latest updates on events Bec’s will be hosting and DJ set times. Upcoming events for the month of April are Latin Night on the 21st, Sarava Zamba on the 22nd and Orquesta Salsa Dura on the 26th.

    Honestly, major difference with former Beckett’s: The staff is INCREDIBLY nice (no kidding, not like that a***hole of a barman they used to have at Beckett’s) and they have a “French 69″ cocktail that is to die for (champagne, gin and lemon). Plus when you’re French (or not French) it’s just great to look at the waitress and order that . Then eat the candied cherry that’s at the bottom of the glass with a not-so-innocent childish smile. Great. Everybody go there!
